Dark Lover: Spinach crepes

The scene was so funny, all these thugs dressed in leather and eating spinach crepes, carefully holding them on the napkins to not make a mess…

“Hey, are those the spinach crepes I like so much?” Blondie said, going for the tray.
“Yes, Sire.”
“Hot damn.”
The other men clustered around the butler, taking what he offered. Along with the coctail napkins. Like they didn’t want to drop anything on the floor. What the hell was this?
” Might I ask a favor?” the butler said.
Mr. Normal nodded with vigor. “Bring out another tray of these and we’ll kill anything you want for you.” Yeah, I guess the guy wasn’t really normal. Just relatively so.
(J.R. Ward: Dark Lover, pb p. 260)

2 cups of milk
2 eggs
2/3 cup spelt flour
3/4 cup wheat flour
5 oz blanched spinach
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
(chopped wasabi rucola if you prefer)
2 oz melted butter
1/3 cup soda water

1. Melt the butter and let it cool.
2. Add eggs and and flours to the milk in a bowl. Mix them together.
3. Add spices, spinach and butter to the batter.
4. Add soda water, whisk moderately.
Heat a pan in medium heat (I prefer a cast iron pan). Fry them in a mixture of olive oil and butter to gain crispy lacelike edges. Fry for about 1 minutes each side, untill they are golden and can be turned easily.

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1)Dark Lover by J.R. Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m writing this review almost three years after I first read Dark Lover. I’ve had at least five re-reads since. But I still remember how I was totally breathless after finishing it the first time. It was like nothing I had read before and it was GOOD. Still is, it’s among my top three from the BDB series.

What got me hooked was the world building, vampires in urban modern day world and the rules of the world… J.R. Ward introduced us to a whole new concept of vampires. And damn, the woman can write! Witty dialogue, scenes that stir up strong emotions and I mean the whole scale.

The story is about Wrath, the king of vampires and Beth, half blooded daughter of Darius, a Black Dagger Brotherhood warrior. And it’s not easy, never is. Falling in love, choosing what to believe in…

Besides being a love story and a HEA romance, this book is also an introduction to the Brotherhood. Phury, Vishous, Tohrment, Zsadist, Rhage. Five complicated alpha males, each one haunted by their past, beast or curse. United by Brotherhood and their loaylty to their King and the race. And their enemies, the lessers… the backstory regarding where the vampires and their archenemies come from is definitely intriguing.
